EDILTECO LAUNCHES A STRATEGIC PROJECT FOR EPDS ACROSS NUMEROUS PRODUCT LINES

The company is investing in specialist expertise and digital tools to make the environmental assessment of its range structured and scalable.

Edilteco has launched a major project dedicated to the life cycle assessment of its products and to obtaining Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for numerous lines in its range.

To carry out the initiative, the company has chosen to rely on the specialist expertise of Ollum and its LCA Tool platform. The aim is to build a robust, replicable system for collecting, processing and keeping up to date the environmental data of Edilteco products.

It is an investment that goes beyond producing individual technical documents. The project aims to embed the measurement of environmental performance into company processes, turning a large amount of information currently spread across different departments into a structured, verifiable asset that can be used over time.

From data complexity to an industrial method

An EPD describes, in a transparent and verifiable way, the environmental impacts associated with a product’s life cycle. It is based on an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) study, which takes into account raw materials, transport, production processes and, depending on the scope analyzed, also distribution, installation, use and end of life.

Behind every result, therefore, lies a complex network of information: compositions and weights, origin of materials, distances travelled, energy consumption, production volumes, packaging, waste and use scenarios.

For a company with a range as broad and varied as Edilteco’s, the challenge is not simply to analyze a single product. The process must be applicable to different families, variants and configurations, while maintaining methodological consistency, data quality and full traceability of the calculations.

The project was set up to meet this need with an organized, scalable method.

A platform configured around Edilteco

LCA Tool is a digital platform developed by Ollum and configured around the products, materials and processes of the company using it. In the Edilteco project, the tool is therefore adapted to the actual characteristics of the product range and of the production organization.

The platform guides users through a structured process: from the product description to the composition of raw materials, from transport to production consumption, through to any delivery, installation and use stages.

The system includes checks on data completeness and consistency, flags possible anomalies and makes it possible to analyze the contribution of the different life cycle stages. The results include the environmental indicators required for EPD reporting and can be exported together with the related calculation chains, ensuring the traceability required during verification.

Ollum provides methodological support, platform configuration, user training and technical assistance at the stages set out in the project. Edilteco keeps its knowledge of its own products, formulations and production systems at the heart of the process.

The project at a glance

Objective: life cycle assessment (LCA) and the path towards Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for numerous lines in the Edilteco range.

Partner: Ollum, for methodological support, platform configuration, training and technical assistance.

Tool: LCA Tool, a digital platform configured around Edilteco products, materials and processes.

Departments involved: research and development, technical office, purchasing, production, logistics, maintenance and environment.

Expected outcome: a body of environmental data that is structured, verifiable, reusable and can be updated over time.

A reusable information asset

One of the most significant aspects of the initiative is the ability to reuse the information already collected in a controlled way.

Materials, suppliers, transport routes and production processes can be organized into shared libraries and recalled across different projects. Semi-finished products can also be calculated just once and then used as components of several products.

This approach reduces duplication and makes the analysis of complex lines, or lines with numerous variants, more efficient. At the same time, version control safeguards the stability of results: a project that has already been declared remains linked to the data and database with which it was developed.

The platform also makes it possible to compare products and scenarios, to analyze the variables that most affect the results and, where the requirements allow, to manage declarations covering groups of products.

Life cycle assessment thus becomes an ongoing business process, no longer a one-off activity to be rebuilt for each new declaration.

A project that spans the whole organization

The quality of an LCA study depends first and foremost on the quality of the data used. For this reason the project involves several Edilteco departments: research and development, technical office, purchasing, production, logistics, maintenance and environment.

Bills of materials, consumption, production volumes and supplier information are collected according to common criteria. Each department contributes its own expertise to building a complete, updatable and verifiable picture.

A shared method does not only serve the path towards EPDs: it also improves the availability and clarity of environmental information within the company.

From compliance to knowledge

The value of the project does not end with the publication of the environmental declarations.

Having structured data makes it possible to understand more precisely the contribution of materials, transport and production processes, to compare alternative solutions and to identify the variables on which to focus research and development activities.

The information collected can also support dialogue with designers, contractors, clients and international partners, responding to the growing demand for transparency in the construction sector.

For Edilteco, which has been developing technologies for thermal and acoustic insulation, renovation and passive fire protection since 1981, measuring means adding a new dimension to its capacity for innovation: gaining an ever better understanding of the impacts of its products in order to base future decisions on solid foundations.

With this project, Edilteco is equipping itself with the expertise and tools needed to tackle the path towards EPDs on an industrial scale. It is an investment in data quality, in transparency and in the ability to turn sustainability into measurable knowledge.
